The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Pinedale Field Office hosted a rock and mineral seminar on Wednesday, July 21. BLM Geologist Catharine Woodfield (in the blue shirt on the right), talked about the various rocks and minerals that can be found in the area. Participants brought in rocks, minerals and petrified wood from their collections for her to identify. Woodfield said a wide variety of rock types can be found in the Upper Green River Valley, as well as fossils, minerals and some gemstones.

The usual rockhound materials, including agates and stones, may be collected in reasonable quantities for hobby use, about a "backpack full". Petrified wood collection on BLM lands is limited to 25 pounds plus one piece per day to a maximum of 250 pounds per year. Larger quantities require a permit for a fee.

Woodfield said she welcomes people bringing in rocks they are curious about and she is happy to help identify them.
