U.S. wants to make it easier to wiretap the Internet
September 27, 2010

The New York Times published an article saying that Federal law enforcement and national security officials are preparing to seek sweeping new regulations for the Internet to require all services that enable communications to be technically capable to comply with a wiretapping order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages. The new laws would include social networking websites like Facebook, e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, and peer-to-peer messaging like Skype. Software designers would be required to redesign their programs to allow interception. Federal officials argue their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is "going dark" as people increasingly communicate online instead of by telephone.
