Bridger-Teton plans Prescribed Burn in Wyoming Range
Cottonwood II Aspen Prescribed Burn
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
October 19, 2010

The Bridger-Teton National Forest plans to conduct a prescribed burn in the Cottonwood area near the end of the week. The Cottonwood II Aspen Prescribed burn is located approximately 20 miles west of Daniel, Wyoming on the Big Piney Ranger District. Fire managers are looking to burn a 338 acre unit starting Thursday, October 21 depending on fuel and weather conditions. Ignition operations should take two to three days followed by a few days of mop-up.

The primary objective of the burn is to increase aspen regeneration and reduce encroaching conifer. Additional benefits will be to increase forage conditions for wildlife habitat and reduce hazardous fuels buildup while restoring fire-adaptive ecosystems. This unit will be the first of several to be burned over the next two to three year totaling 1,093 acres.

This vegetation treatment is an interagency cooperative effort with Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Sublette County Fire, and Teton Interagency Fire.
