Obituary - Erma D. Shriver
October 14, 2010

Erma Dean Shriver (92) died peacefully with family by her side at her home on October 12, 2010. Erma was born in her Grandmother’s ranch house on the New Fork River on June 9, 1918, the third child and only girl of Frank and Lydia Steele. She graduated from Pinedale High School in 1936 and was a member of the first graduating class of Pinedale High School to have attended all twelve grades in the Pinedale School District. After graduating high school, she traveled to Denver, Colorado and enrolled in the Barnes Business College.

In 1934, while attending a dance in Pinedale, Erma’s brother Edward, introduced her to the man that would become the love of her life. On December 25, 1936, Erma married Fred E. Shriver. They celebrated almost fifty eight years of marriage ending when Fred passed away on December 4, 1994. Their marriage was blessed with five sons, Kenneth, Donald, Frank, Fred and Gary. Erma also had twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

In 1944, Fred and Erma bought the Ekland Ranch located just a half mile from where Erma was born. She would live her entire life within that half mile radius. The Green River Valley Cattlemen’s Association honored Fred and Erma as life members in 1979.

Erma took great pride in keeping her house and yard in perfect condition. She was known as a wonderful ranch cook, people from miles around loved her cinnamon rolls and sour cream pie. Her chickens were also a source of pride and she loved furnishing fresh eggs to her extended family.

Erma was an avid card player. She belonged to three bridge clubs and loved "bridge day". Erma also enjoyed reading, needlework, crocheting and knitting. Erma was a very competitive bowler and served for many years as the league’s secretary. In 1968, Erma was appointed to the Election Board by the Sublette County Commissioners and served as an election judge in every election until 2006.

Over the last ten years, Erma has enjoyed traveling around the country with her kids and grandkids. She took a cruise to Alaska, a sight seeing trip to Washington DC, a train trip across Canada and on several occasions flew to Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Arizona, and traveled by car to Colorado and Idaho to visit grandbabies.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Community Food Basket or the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale.

Services will be held at Covill Funeral Home on Saturday, October 16, at 11:00am with a gathering to follow at the Sublette County Library.
