Governor Mead’s statement on the passing of Senator Wallop

CHEYENNE, WYOMING – Governor Matt Mead said the State of Wyoming has lost one of its great leaders with the passing of Senator Malcolm Wallop. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976 and left office in 1995.

"My wife Carol and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Wallop. With his brilliance and determination he fiercely defended Wyoming values; advocating for our military, for smaller government and for individual freedoms. Senator Wallop provided leadership for Wyoming and America during his three terms as Senator and every day since. He fought for lower taxes, multiple-use of public lands and developing America’s energy resources. Senator Wallop will be greatly missed as a leader and as a friend."

Enzi statement on the passing of Senator Malcolm Wallop

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., issued the following statement upon learning of the passing of Senator Malcolm Wallop:

"Wyoming was very fortunate to have Malcolm Wallop representing us in the Senate for 18 years. For all of his three terms, he was a powerful and effective presence in Congress that ensured the people of Wyoming were heard and their concerns were addressed. Although there are many accomplishments I could mention, I think none would make him more proud than the Congressional Awards program that he helped to create. Over the years it has served to inspire countless young Americans to believe in themselves and their ability to change the world – beginning in their own backyard. Thanks to his initiative the young people of our nation will continue to dare to do great things in the service of their neighbors and their communities. I cannot think of a better way for Malcolm to be remembered."

Lummis statement on the death of Senator Wallop

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) released the following statement on the death of Senator Malcolm Wallop:

"It is with deep sadness that Al and I learned of Senator Wallop’s death. I first met Senator Wallop when he was a Wyoming legislator briefing college students on legislative issues. I was one of those college students. Senator Wallop’s knowledge of conservation and public lands issues was impressive then, and only grew over the years. Wyoming owes Senator Wallop a debt of gratitude for the way he spoke for Wyoming people during the years when the battle cry was, ‘Cattle free by ’93,’ a slogan used by anti-public lands groups. On energy, on agriculture, on public lands issues, Senator Wallop was all Wyoming, all the time. I salute a great man who did great things for his state."

"He leaves a proud legacy of a Wyoming Senator who solved problems and initiated great solutions. He set a high bar for public service and all of Wyoming is grateful.

"Whether he was serving in the Army, the Wyoming Legislature or in the United States Senate, Malcolm always stood for freedom. For decades, he worked to strengthen America’s national security and protect states’ rights. His commonsense and commitment helped break down Washington’s barriers to American energy development. Our nation continues to benefit from his leadership today.

"There will be much more to say about Malcolm in these coming days and weeks as we seek to honor his legacy.

"I will miss Malcolm’s friendship and support. Bobbi and I send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends throughout this great nation. We will continue to keep the entire Wallop family in our thoughts and prayers."
