By local historian and author Ann Noble Local author, Ann Noble, and Arcadia Publishing are pleased to announce the release of the new book, "Images of America series is Big Piney and Marbleton," which is set to publish on Monday, October 24th. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of the area.
Big Piney and Marbleton are one mile apart and attempts to combine the two towns have been unsuccessful. The area had been home to family-operated cattle ranches starting in 1878 and a year later Daniel B. Budd and Hugh McKay brought 1,000 cattle from Nevada and were stopped here due to the weather. Founded by Daniel, Big Piney was incorporated in a boggy area on July 5, 1913 and is the oldest settlement in Sublette County.
Daniel’s eldest son, Charles, had hoped to build the town up on the bench to alleviate the problem of wet land. He founded Marbleton, the newer town, which was incorporated in 1914. Big Piney has been called the "Icebox of the Nation" because it had the coldest year-round average temperature in the country when it was officially made a weather station in 1930.
In great isolation and fierce winters, the citizens of this area survived and even thrived in a vast landscape. It is a story of community strength and fortitude. Cattle remain a vibrant part of the local economy and the land has been drilled for oil since the 1920s. Both towns have known several booms and busts, typical of the energy industry.
The 128-page, soft-cover book will sell for $21.99. It will be available at area bookstores, independent retailers and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or www.arcadiapublishing.com.
Ann Chambers Noble, an author and historian living in Sublette County, has researched and written extensively about Wyoming history, including Pinedale, a book that is also part of Arcadia’s Images of America series. The photographs in this book were drawn from the Green River Valley Museum and from the family collections of longtime area residents.
Book signings will be held: Saturday, November 19, 2011 Green River Valley Museum, Big Piney, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Museum of the Mountain Man Annual Wreath and Chocolate Auction, Pinedale. Saturday, December 10, 2011 after the Mountain Man Christmas Parade at the Cowboy Shop in Pinedale.
