Game and Fish announces Conservation Stamp Art Contest
by Wyoming Game and Fish
December 11, 2012

Wyoming Game and Fish Department will begin accepting entries January 1 for the Wyoming Conservation Stamp art contest. The ruffed grouse will be the subject of the contest, which is now in its 30th year. The winning artwork will appear on the 2014 Wyoming Conservation Stamp.

Each year Game and Fish selects a species to appear on more than 100,000 conservation stamps. The winning artist receives a cash award of $3,500. The second-place artist receives $1,500, third place receives $750. The competition is open to professional artists. Contest entries will be accepted January 1 to March 15. Judges will select winners April 12, 2013 in Cheyenne.

Contest rules, forms, and deadlines are available at wgfd.wyo.gov. Artists may request printed rules and entry forms be mailed to them at a later date by calling (307) 777-4600.

The ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is common throughout the Wyoming’s western forests. Black Hills National Forest in the northeastern part of the state is also home to a small population of ruffed grouse. Although the ruffed grouse has two color phases -- red and gray -- the gray phase is found in Wyoming.

Last year’s contest featured the greater short-horned lizard. Karla Mann of Virginia Beach, Virginia painted the winning entry that will appear on the 2013 Wyoming Conservation Stamp.
