August 8, 2013

(4:30PM) - The Type III firefighting team continues to manage firefighting efforts for the Packer Creek, Kendall Mountain and Green Fires burning in the Bondurant and Upper Green River drainage area of the Pinedale Ranger District. All of the fires were caused by lightning.

Packer Creek Fire:
401 acres; 65 percent contained; burning in heavy timber, and dead and down trees on a ridge between N. Beaver drainage and Little Twin drainage approximately 22 miles north of Daniel Junction; Began Aug. 2; Fire managers are planning to return management of the Packer Creek Fire to the Pinedale District tomorrow Aug. 9.
Resources: 70 firefighters, including 2 Type II Hand crews and 2 Wildland Engines.
Activities: Fire is being fully suppressed. Firefighters made good progress but will continue to mop-up heavy fuels and spot fires securing fireline.

Closures: An Emergency Area Closure has been put in place for public and firefighter safety. The Packer Miner Road (FS Roads #606, 607, 608, & 609) is closed at the boundary for public safety. The public is asked to avoid Miner Creek Road.

Kendall Mountain Fire:
150 acres. Burning in high, rocky terrain in the Bridger Wilderness, east of Boulder Basin in the Upper Green River Valley; began Aug. 1; Water drops were made on the fire yesterday as the fire expanded in size due to debris rolling downhill and short-range spotting.
Activities: Today two fire engines are assigned for area protection and assessment. Fire managers are developing long-term plans to confine and contain the fire that is burning in exceptionally difficult terrain.

Green Fire:
549 acres. Located 15 miles north of the Kendall Fire. Spotting, torching in the heavy dead and down timber of Roaring Fork Basin. Began Aug. 1.

Resources: 75 firefighters, 3 Type I Hand crews, and 3 Helicopters (Type 1, 2 and 3).
Activities: Smokejumpers and Helitack crews, with support of helicopters, work to confine the fire south of Roaring Fork Creek. Firefighters prepare structure protection for the two private in-holdings south of the fire near the Green River. Fire managers are developing long term management plans for this busy recreational area.
Closures: The area closure includes all National Forest System Lands within the following perimeter: from the confluence of the Roaring Fork River and the Green River southerly and easterly along the Green River and along the east side of the Lower Green River Lake to the confluence of Clear Creek and the Green River, then northerly and easterly along Clear Creek to Clear Lake, then northerly along the east ridge of Osborn Mountain to Osborn Mountain summit, then from the summit of Osborn Mountain to Native Lake, then westerly along the Roaring Fork River to the point of the beginning.

Currently there are six fires burning on the Bridger-Teton National Forest and Grand Teton National Park. Fire danger for both the Park and Forest has been changed to High Fire Danger.
