Sublette County youth to celebrate National 4-H Week October 1-7
by Robin Schamber, UW 4-H & Youth Development Educator
October 2, 2017

For the 75th consecutive year, millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country will be celebrating National 4-H Week during the first full week of October. Sublette County 4-H will leverage National 4-H Week this year by showcasing the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people, and will highlight the remarkable 4-H youth in our community who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them.

The Sublette County 4-H program will celebrate National 4-H week with an open house on Monday October 2nd at the Extension Office in Pinedale from 4-7pm and Tuesday October 3rd at the Big Piney Library from 4-7pm. 4-H parent volunteer Phil Vrska will be making a pulled pork dinner for the open house on Monday for families to enjoy for just $7.00 per plate. The community is invited to come in and learn about the 4-H program, projects and activities and meet volunteers and 4-H members.

Each year 4-H youth write about their 4-H experiences. Recent graduate and 10 year member Justin Winkelman writes, "4-H has had a great impact on my life. It helps with learning about responsibilities, making decisions and completing what you start". Ten year member Taylor Ruckman, writes, "Thanks to my club and my community, I have more to contribute to my country and my world". Both of these youth participated in several projects throughout their 4-H years including market swine, shooting sports, foods and nutrition and fabric and fashion. Some of the most popular 4-H projects in Sublette County are shooting sports, where youth can participate in rifle, air rifle, pistol, shotgun, muzzleloading and archery and of course a variety of livestock projects. Other popular projects that one may not typically associate with a program that has roots in Agriculture are STEM projects, robotics and rocketry.

4-H alumni around the country are always the first to acknowledge the significant positive impact 4-H had on them as young people; the opportunities and experiences that 4-H provides youth empowers them to become true leaders. In fact, research has shown that young people in 4-H are almost four times as likely to contribute to their communities, and are twice as likely to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs in their free time.

In Sublette County, over 320 4-H youth and 75 volunteers from the community are involved in 4-H.

About 4-H:
4-H, the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization, cultivates confident kids who tackle the issues that matter most in their communities right now. Outside the United States, independent, country-led 4-H organizations empower one million young people in more than 50 countries. National 4-H Council is the private sector, non-profit partner of the Cooperative Extension System and 4-H National Headquarters located at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
