Winter driving conditions begin

October 23, 2018

On the morning of Tuesday October 23rd, 2018, Sublette County Unified Fire responded to the report of a single vehicle accident in the Hoback area. Resources from Sublette County Fire Battalions 3 (Bondurant) and 5 (Daniel), Sublette County Search and Rescue, Sublette County EMS and Sublette County Sherriff’s office all responded.

Initial reports indicated swift water rescue may have been required but on arrival responders determined that the vehicles only occupant, the driver, was already helped out of the vehicle by Good Samaritans. The driver sustained only minor injuries when the vehicle encountered slick road conditions, leaving the pavement and rolling on to its side in the Hoback River.

SCUF would like to remind all drivers that this time of year road conditions can change rapidly. As we come into the winter season be sure to "winterize" your vehicles and take it slow when traversing the highways during the fall/winter season. Here are a few tips for "winterizing" your vehicle.

• Maintain good vehicle condition:
o Ensure your lights, battery, windshield wipers and defroster are all in good working order
o Tire condition – properly inflated with good tread depth and consider utilizing "snow" tires for added traction
• Prepare and keep a winter emergency kit in your car with things such as:
o A snow shovel and brush, reflective triangles, a bag of kitty litter or sand for traction, extra clothes, gloves, hand warmers, hats and thermal blankets
o First-aid kit
o Nonperishable high-energy food items, like jerky, nuts, energy bars and water
• Have a travel plan
o Inform someone of your intended route and travel times
o Stay up to date with road conditions – The Wyoming 511 app is one of many resources for road conditions and closures. It can also be used to send your GPS location via text message to another user.
