A final memorial for Sadie Hall
Recognizing an early woman in Pinedale

Sarah Elizabeth "Sadie" (Shaw) Hall was an early settler of Pinedale before it even officially became a town. She was born in Ohio in 1870 and married her husband, Harry Hall, in 1893 in Nebraska. The couple moved to Pinedale in 1900, following the old Oregon Trail, and filed for a homestead of 320 acres on Pole Creek in 1901. Harry became one of the first Forest rangers in the area. They both spent a lot of time going into the area mountains, and Sadie loved fishing and horses. They were both involved in the local community and civic life. After Pinedale became incorporated in 1904, Harry was one of the first town councilmen. He died in 1915.

Sadie moved into town and lived at 231 West Magnolia Street. She served as Pinedale Town Clerk for a time. Like many women in the community, Sadie served the community in many volunteer positions. In 1918 she took 12 Camp Fire Girls to Fremont Lake for a 10-day camping trip. Sadie is remembered as an Auxiliary member to the Phillips-Edwards Post 47. In 1936 she started Poppy Day sales to raise money to honor World War I dead and to raise funds to help disabled veterans. She had a camera and took a lot of pictures of the early Pinedale area. These photos are now in the photo collection at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale. Sadie died in 1964.

Three local women: Mary Lynn Worl, Jo Crandall and Laurie Latta learned that Sadie and her husband Harry were buried in the Pinedale Cemetery. To their surprise, they saw that while Harry had a large headstone, Sadie had none. Mary Lynn, who knew Sadie, said, "I was mad when I saw she didn’t have a headstone." The trio became determined to rectify that. Mary Lynn’s family provided the large memorial rock for the headstone. Donations were collected to buy a bronze plaque. Cemetery staff set the stone and Tom Blagg volunteered to mounted the plaque. A dedication of the headstone was held on Thursday, September 21st 2023 at the Pinedale Cemetery.

During the headstone presentation, Laurie Latta said, "There are a lot of really accomplished women in the county we don’t know a lot about." Laurie and her husband, Jim, have spent considerable time doing oral interviews of long-time residents in the area to preserve their stories. The trio of women are hoping to get more people interested in potentially looking at a legacy project for Sublette County women. They decided to start with Sadie Hall and then do more women in the future. A fund has been started with some seed money to help with costs, and is being administered by the Sublette County Historical Society. If anyone is interested in helping with the project and research, they can contact Mary Lynn at mlworl@centurytel.net.

Thank you to Mary Lynn Worl for her contributions to this story.
