Garden of Beauty

The Sage and Snow Garden of Beauty Committee was delighted to find Rick and Jenny Williams’ beautiful gardens tucked in a quiet space along the banks of the New Fork River. Only their neighbors would know about this beautiful spot, and we are so happy to have found it and honor them with a Garden of Beauty Award. Jenny loves plants and grows them in interesting spaces. She loves lavender plants and they are sprinkled throughout her gardens. She grows tomatoes outside and inside their large hoophouse. Kale and spinach are thriving in grow tubs around the porch and hoop house. Peas line a fence surrounding a whimsical garden of daisies, petunias, and knickknacks. Their yard has a variety of interesting shrubs, including Mugo pines, lilacs, chokecherries, dogwoods, blue willows, and crabapples. Their large hoop house is filled with cucumbers, zucchini and patty pan squash, corn, asparagus, tomatoes, peas, watermelon, cantaloupe, peppers, carrots, and flowers tucked into every available space, including petunias, marigolds, alyssum, and violas. The hoophouse has a metal frame with a 6 ml poly cover and is cooled with a large air conditioner and fans. One large raised bed is constructed with concrete blocks and the other has a wood frame. Inside the hoop house are two large containers filled with compost and worms to create and collect worm castings to enrich garden beds. If Jenny notices aphids in the hoop house, she immediately releases lady bugs to clean up the aphids. She uses a liquid fish/kelp fertilizer to give plants a boost during the growing season. Like so many gardeners, Jenny finds peace and vitality working with her gardens.
