MMM Spring Thaw Party & Annual Meeting March 5

The Sublette County Historical Society and Museum of the Mountain Man invite members and the public to their annual Spring Thaw Party and Annual Meeting on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at the Museum in Pinedale, Wyoming.
Social hour starts at 6:00 pm with light food and refreshments. There will be a short business meeting to elect new board members and this year’s officers. After the business meeting, the evening’s program will start around 7:00 pm.
Special guest speaker will be archaeologist Cody Newton with the program "Program: Fort Antonio: Investigations at an 1830s Apsáalooke Trading Post on the Powder River, Wyoming."
Fort Antonio, now commonly known as the Portuguese Houses, was a stockaded trading post built under the direction of Antonio Montero, while employed by Benjamin Bonneville, in 1834 to trade with the Apsáalooke, or Crow. Montero operated the post intermittently until 1839–40. Beginning in the spring of 2023, avocationalists undertook a systematic metal detector survey of the post location. The resultant metal detector survey resulted in the recovery of over 800 artifacts.
Cody Newton is an archaeologist with over 20 years working in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado – Boulder and currently works at an environmental consulting firm in Sheridan. Aside from the Fur Trade Era, Dr. Newton's research interests include Paleoindian studies, bison evolution, bison-based subsistence, early European exploration, the historic Plains Indian Wars, and historic Euro-American settlement.
